2015/16 is set to be an exciting year for CivSoc. This year’s committee look to improve upon what has already been a very successful year for the society. 2014/15 saw the beginning of the CivSoc vs JUGS football rivalry, along with some hard fought games against the staff. CivSoc also began to promote and help with the RESPECT scheme, which aims to find students summer placements, and topped the year off with an exceptional representation from CivSoc at the EPS Societies Awards which saw Joel Evans, a CivSoc member, winning Volunteer of the Year. CivSoc would like to say a special thank you to Yasmine Hujair who has put a lot of time and effort into making the society a success this year in her role as Secretary.

The introduction of some new committee members: Sarah Jones as Treasurer, Connor Bedford and James Macdonald as Social Secretaries and Jake Rennie as Sports Rep, has brought new enthusiasm and ideas to CivSoc. They join the previous committee members Philip Morgan, Beth McGoff and James O’Neill who have undertaken new roles as President, Secretary and Industrial Liaison respectively, and Patrick Gittings has retained his role as Vice-President.

CivSoc’s main aim for this year is to provide a broad range of new opportunities for its members. As well as continuing its annual favourite events such as the High-Vis bar crawl, laser quest and pub golf, CivSoc have started to create new events. Jake Rennie has already organised an inaugural CivSoc vs JUGS rounders match and he seeks to establish regular fixtures for the CivSoc football team. Social Secretaries Connor and James look to introduce new social activities to attract all members of Civil Engineering to join in and interact with other members in the society. Patrick Gittings is also introducing Civil Engineering hoodies for the new year, enabling people to proudly represent their School. Another exciting prospect for CivSoc this year is working closely with the EPS Community and Carillion to offer members new opportunities and to liaise with people in industry, promoting links between students and companies. Whilst this is still in the early stages, it will be an exciting development to watch.
