"There is a really friendly and inclusive atmosphere within the School of Computer Science."

MSc Computer Science, School of Computer Science

Why did you originally apply to do your chosen course at Birmingham?

I applied to study for an MSc Computer Science because I wanted to move into a career in the field after studying Mathematics at undergraduate level. I chose to study the degree at the University of Birmingham as the department had a great reputation and was ranked first in the country in some league tables. Both the University and the School also have good connections with many top employers, providing me with a great opportunity to find the right job for me when I graduate.

What do you think are the best points of your course?

The best thing about the course is the ability to cater to students with no previous knowledge of Computer Science, whilst also challenging and expanding the knowledge of students who may have some previous experience in the subject. This is great for anyone looking to get a well-rounded education in Computer Science in only a year.

What’s the best thing about studying at the University of Birmingham?

The University has some great facilities and societies, providing students with plenty to do outside of their studying. They are still continuing to invest with a new sports centre currently under construction.

What’s your highlight of your time at the University?

I got involved in a student mobile app competition, which allowed me to gain relevant work experience and also introduced me to team members with similar ideas to work alongside. The event was sponsored by some big employers and provided great networking opportunities as well as something to put on my CV.

What advice would you give to students thinking about studying on the course?

To get involved in as many extra curricular and networking events as possible that are related to their course topic. As well as improving employability, it also helps bolster the knowledge learnt on the course by applying it more practically.

Is there anything extra students thinking about studying on the course should know?

There is a really friendly and inclusive atmosphere within the School of Computer Science. Although there were over 100 students on the course, many students knew each other and there was plenty of support from other students and staff.
