Medical School

The College of Medical and Dental Sciences at the University of Birmingham is a major international centre for research and education in medicine, medical sciences, dentistry and nursing.

Bringing together academic staff, research staff and doctoral students across a wealth of medicine and science related subject areas, the College consists of five schools:

School of Cancer Sciences...

The School of Cancer Sciences is one of the world’s premier translational cancer research institutes. Underpinned by excellent basic science across the University campus, the School works with many clinical partners to improve the outlook for cancer patients. 

The School's portfolio is broad and ranges from leading research in NMR spectroscopy through to large clinical trials that change the standard of care in diseases such as breast cancer. The School includes the first Cancer Research UK Centreand have been designated as a ‘Centre of Excellence’ by Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.

School of Clinical and Experimental Medicine...

The School of Clinical and Experimental Medicine plays a major role in the research and teaching carried out by the College of Medical and Dental Sciences and brings together extensive expertise in a wide-ranging field of medical sciences with an integrated clinical and basic science portfolio, associating excellence in research, education and clinical leadership.

Research in basic and clinical sciences in these areas is fully integrated in the School, which offers state-of-the-art facilities, including the Institute of Biomedical Research and the  Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility.

School of Dentistry...

Dentistry at Birmingham is the first choice for scientists, professionals, and leading students everywhere. Today, the School of Dentistry is a thriving institution having over 100 dental, therapy and biomaterial students per year. There are a large number of postgraduate research students together with support staff present in the school. The school continues to grow and is well placed to meet the demands and challenges of the coming years.

School of Health and Population Sciences...

The School of Health and Population Sciences  (HaPS) has research expertise in the fields of primary care, public health and epidemiology, clinical trials, health technology assessments, health economics, occupational and environmental medicine, biostatistics, health services research, health care development and nursing.

School of Immunity and Infection...

An internationally recognised Centre for research in Immunology and Infection hosting the MRC Centre for Immune Regulation, Centre for Liver Research, and the Rheumatology Research Group supporting basic and translational research in immunology and inflammatory diseases of the joint, eye, liver and kidney. Staff within the School are also members of the newly established Institute for Microbiology and Infection a University wide initiative in bacteriology and infection on one site.
