AVIVA Medical Underwriter

The best part of the Medical Science degree were the wide variety of topics covered within the course."

How has your career developed since graduating from the University of Birmingham?

The medical knowledge I picked up during my degree helps me a great deal when assessing medical reports as part of people’s applications for life and critical illness cover.

What is the best thing about the job you are doing now?

Looking at people’s medical records and finding out about interesting medical conditions.

Why did you originally apply to do your chosen course at Birmingham?

I always wanted to study Medicine but my application was unsuccessful so I opted for Medical Science which seemed to cover the same sort of topics that interested me but without the patient contact and becoming a doctor at the end.

What did you think were the best points of the Medical Science degree at the University?

The wide variety of topics covered within the course. Also the great student life with loads of different societies to join.

What advice would you give to current students studying on the course?

Keep on with your studies, although I enjoy my job I regret not having gone on to do a masters degree or PhD.
