Could a vaccine help to fight cancer? You can help us find out

Description
Working with Cancer Research UK, the Birmingham research team (Prof Alan Rickinson, Dr Neil Steven and Dr Graham Taylor; all in the School of Cancer Sciences) have already tested the vaccine in a small number of patients with an EBV-related head and neck cancer. It is currently being tested in larger clinical trials worldwide.

Real-time genome sequencing helps control hospital outbreak

Description
Pioneering use of whole genome sequencing in real time to help control a hospital outbreak is reported in a paper published today in the open-access journal Genome Medicine. The research corroborates the use of the technique as a rapid and cost-effective way of tracking and controlling the spread of drug-resistant hospital pathogens.

Asthma sufferers could benefit from new laser research

Description
UK scientists, including researchers from the University of Birmingham, have used a laser beam trap to examine how drug particles from asthma inhalers behave as they are projected through the air. Their findings could improve the effectiveness of inhalers for the over 5 million people in the UK suffering from asthma.

Birmingham and Nottingham projects to strengthen UK-Rio research links

Description
The University of Birmingham and the University of Nottingham have strengthened their collaborations with Brazilian institutions in the state of Rio de Janeiro after securing funding for a number of country-specific research projects. The Rio de Janeiro State Funding Agency (FAPERJ) has allocated £100,000 for nine research projects in 2014/2015, with the amount matched by combined funding from the Universities of Birmingham and Nottingham.
