An event entitled 'On Being a Postdoc' was held on September 30 to mark the launch of the College's Postdoctoral Training and Career Development initiative. Short talks by members of staff outlining the new initiative and recounting their own postdoc experiences were presented in the Leonard Deacon Lecture Theatre, followed by a lecture, with music, from Professor Ron Laskey, University of Cambridge. Prof Laskey is perhaps unique among Fellows of the Royal Society in being in demand to present both his scientific data and perform his songs. This memorable hour was followed by food and drink in the Wolfson Centre and more music, this time from Far Future, a band featuring two of our postdocs. The take-home message from the day was that you will be a better (and happier) scientist if you leave your bench/computer occasionally and take a look around.
