Adebayo Adebisi "The idea about NHS management stemmed from exposure via one of the Careers Network sessions involving a guest speaker whom had actually taken part in the programme. Her experiences and the opportunities she is now being exposed to made it a worthwhile option for me."

Why did you originally apply to study this course at the University of Birmingham?

Studying Medical Science was initially more of a personal pursuit to understand myself and my health condition with the ultimate aim of improving everyday living to sufferers of not just my unfortunate condition but to others of related predicaments. The University of Birmingham was an easy choice as it provides the best, in my opinion, available service for aMedical Science degree the UK has to offer and the fact that I live in Birmingham made it even simpler.

Studying Medical Science at the University of Birmingham was one of the best experiences of my life personally. By enrolling into the course you immediately feel like part of a family. The support you get for both academic and personal problems are second to none. There is always someone to talk to about any form of problems and required help is always provided.

What do you think were the best parts of the programme?

It is difficult to pinpoint the best part of the degree as all aspects were awesome and got better each year. If I were to choose a one however, the research project which all students have to undertake in the third year would have to be the front runner. I was fortunate enough to work with great supervisors with immaculate attention to detail and they made the experience very worthwhile. You get a sense of independence and it gives you a taste of the workings in the research world in one's desired field.

What advice would you give to current students/applicants of the course?

The course is not a sprint race. It is a marathon. It is very important to pace oneself and create a solid foundation. Also the lecturers are all humans just like you; the greatest sin is not to ask when unsure and make assumptions.

How did you grow as a person during your time at university?

I have grown mentally and I am more equipped to deal with any obstacle which I may encounter in life. I understand myself a lot better and I have developed a greater deal of tenacity. I have more importantly learnt to take advice and implement those advices to make myself a better individual. University life does change you as it adds another dimension of finesse not previously known to your way of life.

Why did you decide to pursue your chosen path post-graduation?

A management position combining my experience and my knowledge of the medical field with previous experience in a business environment was the ideal option. My aim now is to ultimately manage within the NHS.

In what way do you think the course prepared you for this?

First of all, the course provided me with experiences of working in a team, leading a team and working independently. It gave me valuable time management skills as well as impeccable communication skills. The course has empowered me with a wealth of other skills which are well suited to any working environment.

Did you attend any sessions during your course designed to prepare you for your future career?

I attended a vast majority of the Careers Network sessions and I must say it provided knowledge about opportunities you would not know actually existed but were well tailored to your skill sets. The idea about NHS management stemmed from exposure via one of the Careers Network sessions involving a guest speaker whom had actually taken part in the programme. Her experiences and the opportunities she is now being exposed to made it a worthwhile option for me. Even if you cannot envisage what the future holds in terms of a career path, the Careers Network team are excellent in what they do and provide opportunities matching your specifications.
