Now a Graduate Intern for the Cardiac/Liver Department at Birmingham Children's Hospital.

Why did you originally apply to study this course at the University of Birmingham?

I have always had an interest in studying the human body in health and disease so Medical Science seemed a great option. The University of Birmingham is an excellent university with a beautiful campus. The Medical School has brilliant facilities and on an open day the lecturers were really friendly and approachable.

Medical Science at the University of Birmingham is a fantastic degree, very challenging but definitely worth it.

What do you think were the best parts of the programme?

Definitely the 10 week research project in the 3rd year. I undertook an independent research project in the reproductive biology labs which I thoroughly enjoyed and gained so many skills from. My supervisors were really supportive throughout my project and taught me many lab techniques. I carried out my own experiments and obtained some results which I was able to discuss in my dissertation.

What advice would you give to current students/applicants of the course?

Enjoy the course make the most of the excellent teachers and the brilliant practical sessions. Keep on top of coursework especially in second year.

How did you grow as a person during your time at university?

I have grown in confidence during my time at university and developed all of my skills through my degree. I have really enjoyed studying medical science, especially all the practical aspects. I have met some wonderful people and made some great friends.

Why did you decide to pursue your chosen path post-graduation?

The graduate internship at Birmingham Children's Hospital is an excellent opportunity to develop my key skills further and to experience a wide range of the roles within the NHS to see where I would like my career to go.

In what way do you think the course prepared you for this?

My Medical Science degree has prepared me for the working world, my communication, public speaking skills, organisational skills and time management have improved greatly. The interviewers at my job interview were particularly impressed with my ability to statistically analyse vast amounts of data, my IT skills and my leadership skills.

Did you attend any sessions during your course designed to prepare you for your future career?

I attended several Careers Network sessions in my 2nd and 3rd year which helped me explore my career options and to prepare. The Medical School careers team have all been wonderful, they have given me brilliant advice and been very supportive in helping me to secure my job at the Birmingham Children's Hospital.
