Lewis Clarke "I decided to pursue a career in research after the experience gained from the Medical School funding a summer placement at the School of Cancer Sciences on campus, as well as my third year research project."

Why did you originally apply to study this course at the University of Birmingham?

I was interested in studying dentistry, but also wanted to learn aspects of biology I had studied at A-level in more depth such as immunology, with the idea of progressing onto a postgraduate course in dentistry.

What do you think were the best parts of the programme?

My third year research project looking into how different processes of cell differentiation induce viral transcription and malignant transformation by oncogenic herpes viruses.

What advice would you give to current students/applicants of the course?

Apply for opportunities to work in a research environment in the summer of your first or second years on the course, and perfect short essay technique in preparation for your final examinations.

How did you grow as a person during your time at university?

I significantly improved my time-management, confidence, presentation and writing skills.

Why did you decide to pursue your chosen path post-graduation?

I decided to pursue a career in research after the experience gained from the Medical School funding a summer placement at the School of Cancer Sciences on campus, as well as my third year research project.

In what way do you think the course prepared you for this?

I feel that every aspect of the course has contributed to the development of the skills and knowledge I will need when I undertake my PhD.

Did you attend any sessions during your course designed to prepare you for your future career?

I attended the Careers Network CV sessions to help pick apart my current achievements and tailor them to the position I was applying for, as well as receive advice on ways of further improving the attractiveness of my CV in the future.
