Louis Francis Monroy Santander, Postgraduate Researcher in the International Development department won first place in the 2016/17 Images of Research with a photograph entitled "Resistance to international peace-building:the case of Bosnia-Herzegovina".
On 01 December 2016, the United Nations Secretary-General has announced a new approach to cholera in Haiti, including compensation to communities and families of victims. The UN Secretary-General has also apologised for what happened and asked forgiveness from Haitian victims, in Creole, French and English. Cholera has been introduced in 2010 by UN peacekeepers, and has killed at least 9,200 people and infected more than 800,000. The University of Birmingham has been active in lobbying for a new UN approach regarding the compensation of the victims of cholera in Haiti.

Jamie McEwan (MA Social Work, 2013) won Gold for 'Newly Qualified Adult Social Worker of the Year', while Annabelle Stock (MA Social Work, 2016) took home Silver as runner-up for 'Student Social Worker of the Year', at a ceremony in London on Friday 25 November.

LifeSavers is a joint initiative by the Church of England and Young Enterprise. It seeks to establish schools savings clubs in primary schools across the UK in conjunction with a financial education curriculum.
