The 3 year GRAB programme has come to an end this year with the final book being The Incredible Human Journey by Professor Alice Roberts. All incoming undergraduates received a copy of the same book to encourage them to engage with academic ideas and to create a shared experience for all new students.
Last year's events
At the beginning of the academic year 2013-14 the GRAB book was launched with an Instagram competition on the theme My Incredible Journey.
Throughout the year a number of events were organised both centrally and within Colleges. The centrally organised events included a GRAB themed book quiz, a lecture by Prof Roberts in the Lapworth Museum, and a GRAB conference with inspirational academic speakers from each College, which attracted over 200 attendees
Aims and achievements
GRAB has achieved its aim of providing a shared intellectual experience and many students have engaged in activities both in their colleges and through participation in centrally-organised events. GRAB’s appeal has reached beyond incoming undergraduates, with many 2nd and 3rd year students and taught postgraduates participating. Throughout, students have also been successfully involved in the organisation of GRAB, from helping to distribute books during Welcome week, to co-judging the photo competition and 4 volunteers helped with the organisation and delivery of the Lapworth and Conference events.
GRAB has also been successfully utilised to facilitate community engagement. In particular, the GRAB conference show-cased inspirational academics from all Colleges speaking on a common platform, attracting visitors from throughout the UK, ranging from schoolchildren to professors.
