In 2011, the University introduced the Great Read at Birmingham. New undergraduate students were given a copy of a selected book from the University and were asked to read it to encourage engagement with academic ideas and to create a shared experience. This was well received by students and the University will be running GRAB again in 2012.
How you can help….
We are asking for student volunteers to join a panel (made up of staff and students) who will be selecting the next Great Read. This will be an interesting and exciting opportunity to be involved in - with the book selected being given to incoming undergraduates in September 2012.
If you are interested in joining the panel, please write a short email (50-100 words) outlining why you would like to be involved. We will select students to join the panel from the expressions of interest we receive.
Please email your expression of interest to join the panel to welcome@contacts.bham.ac.uk by 5pm on Friday 25th November 2011.
Suggest a book
We are also asking for suggested books for consideration by the panel. These could be books with inter-disciplinary topics or themes within them, ideally have a link to the University of Birmingham or the City (but this is not essential) and most importantly would be an engaging and ‘Great Read’ for the students who receive it.
If you have a good suggestion, please do not hesitate to email welcome@contacts.bham.ac.uk including the book title and the author of the book by 25th November 2011.
