Tuition fee

The tuition fee contributes to the cost of your studies at the University.  This includes exams, assessments, access to learning facilities and membership to the Guild of Students. Your tuition fee does not cover membership of University societies or of the Sports Centre.

University of Birmingham central funding schemes

Pre-2012 entry

If your course started before 2012, you may be eligible for a Birmingham Grant and/or a Birmingham Scholarship.

The Birmingham Grant is an award offered to undergraduate students whose household income falls below a given threshold. 

The Birmingham Scholarship is an award for undergraduate students who gained sufficiently high grades in their A-levels. 

You are automatically considered for these schemes and will be notified in writing prior to registration if you are entitled to either of these awards. 

September 2012 entry

If your course starts in September 2012, you may be eligible for the National Scholarship Programme or a Chamberlain Award.

Both schemes are means-tested; you cannot hold both a National Scholarship and a Chamberlain Award.

You are automatically considered for these schemes and will be notified in writing by December if you are entitled to either of these awards. Your letter will confirm your award and payment options.

Other University of Birmingham funds

The University offers a range of subject based scholarships each year. You will have received a letter if you’re entitled to any of these awards.  Enter the amount that you have been awarded into this section and forward a copy of your letter to Student Fees, Finance Office, University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham B15 2TT. 

Deposit or pre-payment

If you’ve paid a deposit, or already made some payments towards your fees, then please enter that amount here.

After you’ve entered all your payments click the ‘Calculate Fee’ button which will show you the remaining balance that needs to be paid directly by you to the University of Birmingham. You can then select how you’d like to pay this balance by choosing the appropriate option. 

Payment options

Credit/debit card

If you want to pay by credit or debit card you’ll need to use our online ePayment Gateway. No administration charges will be incurred for credit or debit card payments made online. Successful payments are confirmed onscreen and an official receipt will be automatically issued upon allocating the payment to your account. These should both be kept for your records.

Bank transfers and online banking

You can pay your fee directly from your bank to the University’s bank account by electronic transfer.  It’s important that you quote your student ID number and name as your reference so we can identify you.  For example, ‘T301800-AN Other’ would be:

T      is for tuition fee (A would be for accommodation)

301800       is your student ID number

AN             are the initials of your forenames

Other         is you family name

Please note that for international money transfers, our receiving bank may deduct a cost of up to £30 for processing this transaction - this is in addition to your own bank's charge when sending the money. Please make sure that you allow for these charges when sending your payment.

Instalments by Direct Debit

Cheque / draft payments

Your cheque or draft must be in sterling, made payable to 'University of Birmingham' and drawn on a UK clearing bank. It is important that you quote your University ID number and name on the reverse of the cheque or draft, along with the type of payment you are making, for example 'Tuition Fee'. This can be posted to us at the address below or brought in person to the Student Fees Enquiry and Income Counter in B Block of the Aston Webb Building.
