Tuition fee

The tuition fee contributes to the cost of your studies at the University.  This includes exams, assessments, access to learning facilities and membership to the Guild of Students. Your tuition fee does not cover membership of University societies or of the Sports Centre.

Deposit or pre-payment

If you have paid a deposit or have made other payments in respect of your tuition fee, please enter the total of these amounts that you have paid in this box, so that the page can correctly calculate the balance to pay. 

Professional and Career Development Loans

If you have applied for a Professional and Career Development Loan please enter the value in the box provided. You must also email studentfees@bham.ac.uk with details of the dates that the loan instalment will be paid.

Other University of Birmingham Funds

If you have written confirmation of any other award from the University that will contribute towards your tuition fee please enter the value in this box and send a scanned copy of the award letter to studentfees@bham.ac.uk

Calculate fee button

After you’ve entered all your payments click the ‘Calculate Fee’ button which will show you the remaining balance that needs to be paid directly by you to the University of Birmingham. You can then select how you’d like to pay this balance by choosing the appropriate option. 

Payment options

Credit/debit card

If you want to pay by credit or debit card you’ll need to use our online ePayment Gateway. No administration charges will be incurred for credit or debit card payments made online. Successful payments are confirmed onscreen and an official receipt will be automatically issued upon allocating the payment to your account. These should both be kept for your records.

Bank transfers and online banking

You can pay using the University of Birmingham's bank transfer platform powered by our partner Western Union Business Solutions.

This service allows you to pay in your local currency and from your home bank account, without worrying about exchange rates or funds arriving short at the University. You will have peace of mind.

Instalments by Direct Debit

To be eligible to pay by instalments you must have a UK bank account that accepts Direct Debits. If you are in any doubt about the type of account that you have, please contact your Bank or Building society.

Applications can be submitted online or, if you prefer, there is the option to print a manual instruction which should be printed, completed and returned to the address shown on the printed form. To apply to pay by Direct Debit, please select either "Monthly Instalments by Direct Debit" or "Termly Instalments by Direct Debit" from the "Methods of Payment" section, once you have calculated the fee that you will have to pay.

Once a Direct Debit application has been received, the payer will receive an Advance Notification advising of the collection dates and amounts. If for any reason these dates or amounts are altered they will receive a replacement Advance Notification at least five working days prior to the payment due date.


Interest Fee

For amounts of over £9,500 there is an interest fee of 1.5%, which is non-refundable. This will not exceed 1% above the Bank of England base rate on the date the application is submitted.

Cancelled Instructions

If your Direct Debit is cancelled for any reason, any outstanding balance will be due in full, immediately.


Failure to pay / late payment

Failure to pay or late payments could have severe consequences and make obtaining credit more difficult. In addition we may charge you default interest. Your attention is drawn to the Regulations of the University of Birmingham Section 5

Cheque / draft payments

Your cheque or draft must be in sterling, made payable to 'University of Birmingham' and drawn on a UK clearing bank. It is important that you quote your University ID number and name on the reverse of the cheque or draft, along with the type of payment you are making, for example 'Tuition Fee'. This can be posted to us at the address below or brought in person to the Student Fees Enquiry and Income Counter in B Block of the Aston Webb Building.
