Widening Horizons Modules

About WHMs

A Widening Horizon Module (previously known as a Module Outside the Main Discipline) is a module that can be taken alongside your main degree programme, allowing you to explore a different discipline during your undergraduate studies. There are 27 different modules to choose from for 2016/17, and a range of languages modules, offered by Languages for All.

Who can take a WHM?

Undergraduate students are required to complete 120 credits each year of their degree programme, but in some cases, the home department will only provide students with 100 credits each year.

  • Students who are are required to make the remaining credit up must register for an WHM.

  • Not all students need to take an WHM. Please ensure that you have checked to see if your degree programme requires you to register for one. A list of the programmes that you require to take a WHM can be viewed here (PDF - 212 KB).  However, this list is not fully exhaustive so if you are in any doubt, please contact your home department for confirmation.

Registering for your WHM - view the handbook

Registering your WHM

First year students can submit their WHM choices online during Welcome week from midday on Tuesday 20th September, and will be able to register for WHMs using the online form.

Students need to pick from the complete list of modules included in the handbook, and registration will close at 8 am on Friday 23rd September.

WHM Event

All first year students taking WHMs are invited to attend our WHM event where representatives of the departments running WHMs this year will be on hand to answer any questions you may have about the modules on offer.

  • Thursday 22nd September
    Great Hall, Aston Webb Building
    from 10:30 until 15:30

Choosing your module

The LC (Year 1) WHM 2016/17 handbook (PDF - 337KB) provides a summary of each module that is being offered for 2016/17. To help you choose wisely, please consider the following:

  • Module enrolment is not done on a first-come first-served basis. Where there are more applications than there are places, allocation will be random to be fair to all.
  • Please do not choose the same module more than once as this will not give you a greater chance of being enrolled on it.
  • Please do not choose a module offered by the department your degree programme belongs to.

Completing the online form

Online form

The online form opens at midday on Tuesday 20th September 2016 and closes at 8am on Friday 23rd September 2016.  Please make sure that you have submitted your choices before this deadline.  When you have submitted your form, you should receive an email confirming receipt of the choices you have made.  If you have not received this email within three hours of submitting the form, please go back to the online form and resubmit your choices.

Continuing Students

MOMDs for Continuing Students

Depending on your programme of study, you may be required to take MOMDs in the second, third or even fourth year of your degree programme. If you are unsure whether you are eligible to register for a MOMD, contact your home department.

Continuing students can now register for MOMDs for 2016/17.

Continuing students are not expected to come to the WHM Registration event. Instead, module information will be made available online in the spring term each year, and it will be up to you to take the time to review the modules on offer, and approach the module contact directly.

Dont forget - You must also register your choice with the Department or School supplying the MOMD, and notify your home Department or School of the module that you have registered for.

Languages for All modules

Students submitting a Languages for All module as one of their choices are required to attend a language assessment session at the WHM Event taking place on 22nd September.

What happens if a WHM is oversubscribed?

In most cases, you will be able to register for your preferred WHM; however, some modules have imposed limits due to venue size. Where this is the case, students will be allocated at random according to their second, third and fourth choices to fill the number of places available.

Modules are not allocated on a 'first-come, first-served' basis. Where a module has received more applications than it has places, students will be randomly assigned after WHM Registration has taken place, based on their second, third and fourth choices. Students will be able to check their module registrations in the my.bham portal after 16:30 on Saturday 24th September to confirm which modules they are registered for.

Second, third and fourth choices

All students are required to submit a second, third and fourth choice WHM. Those students who are not given a place on their first choice of WHM will be allocated their second, third or possibly fourth choice WHM provided there are places available.
