April 2016 - Senior Delegation visit to China
Key stakeholders for the China Institute travelled to China to meet institutional partners and government agencies.
January 2016 - Chinese New Year Celebration
The China Institute hosted a networking lunch and concert at the Bramall Music Building to welcome in the Chinese New Year.
September 2015 - Vice Chanellor visits Guangzhou
Professor Sir David Eastwood, led a senior delegation to Guangzhou and held meetings with the Vice Mayor of Guangzhou, Mr Wang Dong & senior officials from the Bureau of Health & Bureau of Education to strengthen the strategic collaborations with local partner universities and industries.
September 2015 - UK-China Smart Grid Workshop
The University hosted the 2015 UK-China Smart Grid Workshop, organised by the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering, China Electrotechnical Society and the China Institute. The workshop reviewed research progress, identified research achievements, successful collaboration models and how research impacts both nations.
September 2015 - Birmingham Railway Group deepens collaboration with China
The University signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU), one of the leading universities in rail research in China. It is the first step to establishing a joint research centre into high-speed railways.
August 2015 - Chinese traditional musical fusion recital
The China Institute hosted a unique musical fusion event mixing traditional Eastern & Western styles. Professor Haisheng Li, eminent music scholar from Nanning, China, treated the audience to a delightful performance with Xun, the Chinese ancient instrument with 7,000 years of history.
August 2015 - Collaboration with Chinese partners
The University signed collaborative agreements with a number of institutions including Xiamen University, University of Science and Technology, Minzu University; and signed a memorandum of understanding with an investment company GTOG in Beijing for broad-based research and teaching collaboration on autism.
July 2015 - International symposium on medical training
The event was held by Peking University Health Science Center, The National Steering Committee for Medical Professional Degree Education, Health Education England, & the University of Birmingham. This cooperation is part of the wider healthcare-focused trade deal with China.
July 2015 - Internship in Guangzhou Municipal Government
A Birmingham student from the School of Government and Society, Hannah Thompson, undertook her placement with Guangzhou Municipal Government, in the Local Government Guangzhou Office. Hannah conducted her research on sustainable city development and best practice in public service and planning in various countries.
June 2015 - Alumni receptions in Shanghai and Beijing
Birmingham’s international recruitment team hosted two alumni receptions in Shanghai and Beijing. A social media WECHAT group for UoB Beijing Alumni on was set up during the event. It was a welcoming addition to the existing Birmingham Chinese Alumni WECHAT groups that bring our alumni across China closer together.
May 2015 - Appointment of Professor Jon Frampton
Professor Jon Frampton is appointed DPVC for China and a new China Institute board is formed to include high profile academics and colleagues who are engaged in China from across the University.
May 2015 - Birmingham Strengthens Rail Links with China
The University signs a cooperation agreement on railway research and education with one of the world's largest manufacturers of high-speed trains, CSR Sifang. The two parties have agreed to develop new technologies together.
April 2015 - Chirpy Dragon Study
Academics from the University are engaged with grandparents in China to help tackle the increasing problem of obesity among Chinese children in a trailblazing pubic health programme. The Chirpy Dragon Study is jointly supported by Guangzhou Centre for Disease control and the Education Department.
February 2015 - Chinese New Year Celebration
The China Institute organised an event to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The event included a display to showcase engagement with China, a concert performed by three world-class Chinese musicians (pianist Di Xiao, cellist Jiaxin Lloyd Webber and guitarist Xuefei Yang) and a buffet lunch for networking.
May 2014 - Li Siguang Publication Prize Launched
The Li Siguang Publication Prize is launched to encourange in-depth collaboration between UK and China researchers.
March 2014 - China Leadership Forum
The China Leadership Forum titled, ‘UK-China 2020: Partnership for Growth, Prosperity and Reform' and organised by the Great Britain China Centre & Foreign Affairs Office, is held at the China Institute.
February 2014 - Chinese New Year Celebration
The China Institute organised a networking session and event to celebrate Chinese New Year.
October 2013 - British Council Workshop
We jointly organised a workshop with the British Council in China to promote student mobility between Birmingham and China under the Generation UK Scholarship scheme.
July 2013 - Smart Grids Workshop
We co-sponsored the 2013 UK-China Strategic Workshop on Smart Grids, organised by the university, UKERC & Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering (CSEE).
December 2012 - China Institute Launched
The China Institute is launched by Chinese ambassador Liu Xiaoming and vice chancellor Professor Sir David Eastwood.
