A year in Hong Kong

Emily, a fourth-year Political Science student, spent a year studying at Hong Kong University. She says:

‘I always wanted to immerse myself in a different culture, and this was the perfect opportunity to do so. I hoped my time in Hong Kong would give me a new cultural and political perspective on my course, and it has – I even took part in the student demonstrations known as the Umbrella Revolution!

‘When I arrived in Hong Kong I began learning Mandarin, which helped me talk to students and locals about their opinions and knowledge of Chinese politics. Apart from gaining a new skill, I believe this has helped me see global politics from a different perspective to my own.

‘When I came back to Birmingham, I wanted to use my experiences to help other students, so I applied to become a Global Ambassador for the university. Now I talk to prospective year-abroad students about how beneficial and exciting a year spent studying in different country can be.

‘I want to show others they don’t need to be daunted by China or learning Chinese. It’s wonderful place – rich in incredible culture, food and landscapes, with friendly people – that I hope to return to one day.’
