Global Leadership Experience

New for summer 2018, we are launching a project in collaboration with the University of Nottingham, the Global Leadership Experience programme. This programme is a short-term mobility opportunity for students from both universities to spend a week in Hong Kong, hosted by the University of Hong Kong.

The programme will run from the 30 June to 7 July and we are offering up to 25 fully funded places for eligible students to participate in this once in a life-time experience.

What is the Global Leadership Experience?

The Global Leadership Experience (GLE) is a 4 day programme delivered by Common Purpose. This programme will give you an immersive international experience, challenging you to adapt and thrive in a new context while establishing a genuinely global network. The programme will equip you with the tools you need to lead change now and in the future.

What will we do?

The programme includes 4 days of interactive workshops and work experience designed specifically to help you develop meaningful skills to support your future study and future employment prospects. You will meet visionary leaders from global businesses, governments and international not-for-profit organisations.

You will also meet with our alumni community in Hong Kong and have some time to explore the city.

When?

The programme's dates are from 30 June to 8 July 2018. You will fly out from the UK on Saturday 30 June. The programme runs from 2-5 July. You will fly back from Hong Kong on 7 July and land back in the UK on 8 June.

 Who can attend ?

The programme aims to encourage first-year students to take advantage of short-term study abroad opportunities. This year, students who have previously participated in outreach activities at the University of Birmingham, such as the A2B cohort will be considered in priority.

How much will it cost?

Nothing to you. Places are fully funded. This means that your travel insurance, transfers to and from the airport, your flights, accommodation, programme, breakfast, lunch and dinners are all covered by the University of Birmingham.

Thank you to the Alumni Impact Fund and the International Relations Office who are jointly funding this opportunity.

What is the eligibility criteria?

Open to first year students who are from a Widening Participation background.

This could include Access to Birmingham (A2B) and Routes to the Professions (R2P) students, students registered with a disability, a care leaver, first generation of the family into higher education, in receipt of a grant or scholarship, lone parent and from an ethnic minority.

How will applicants be selected ?

Candidates will be selected upon their academic results to date, the quality of their application form and their performance during a potential 'selection day' with short-listed candidates. The process is very competitive as we only have a limited number of places.

During the selection process, additional points will be granted to students who completed Access to Birmingham, Realising Opportunities, Routes to Professions or the Academic Enrichment Programme. Special consideration will also be given to students in receipt of the Chamberlain award, students  who have experience of public care, students who attended a non-selective state secondary school or who have a home postcode in a low progression neighbourhood.

What will be expected of me?

Successful candidates will act as ambassadors of the University of Birmingham in Hong Kong. A professional attitude and strong work ethic will be expected during the programme. Students will also be asked to engage in social media activities and to complete case studies upon return. Full training will be offered.  More details will be provided to short-listed candidates during the selection day.

How to apply?

To apply for this amazing project simply complete the online application form below.  Along with personal information details, the application form asks for a personal statement outlining what you hope to gain from the visit. Short-listed students will be invited to selection day event on Tuesday 20th March or Wednesday 21st March 2018.

Anything else I should know?
