Is a podcast the right medium for you?

Before creating a podcast series, it might be worth using the flowchart below to determine whether it is going to be a communication medium worth your efforts.

  1. Do you know what you want to achieve by creating a podcast?

    • If your answer is yes, proceed to Question 2.
    • If your answer is no, it might be worth considering if a podcast is the best use of your time and effort.
  2. Do you know who your target audience is?

    • If your answer is yes, proceed to Question 3.
    • If your answer is no, it will be hard to create a successful strategy without a target audience.
  3. Do you have a unique selling point or insight?

    • If your answer is yes, proceed to Question 4.
    • If your answer is no, your voice is likely to get lost in the crowd without a USP or key insight.
  4. Do you have the time, resource and budget to produce a podcast?

    • If your answer is yes, proceed to Question 5.
    • If your answer is no, it will be difficult for you to produce a successful, reputationally enhancing podcast without these elements.
  5. Have you connected with your College/Department marketing team?

    • If your answer is yes, great! If they think it's a good idea, you can start to discuss next steps.
    • If your answer is no, we advise approaching them. They are the best people to help you get your podcast made and heard.
