Birmingham, what's Birmingham?

[A Siri-like voice emanates from a smart speaker]
Birmingham is England's second city. It's at the heart of the Midlands and is famous for curries, canals and chocolate…

[Female voice-over]
Oh, stop it. It's so much more than that!

The city was the engine room of the Industrial Revolution and the birthplace of heavy metal. A place of new flavours, entertainment, sports, groundbreaking creativity, and style.

And did you know that here at the University of Birmingham, we're home to the world's tallest freestanding clock tower, dinosaurs, a Monet masterpiece, an Edwardian house, and Botanical Garden?

We and our city have a long history of firsts. Yes, it's in the spirit of our city and our people.

We're the place where pacemakers were developed, artificial blood was synthesised, and where the cavity magnetron was developed, paving the way for radar and the microwave oven.

Now, as the host city of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, it's our time to shine.

Our University was the country's first civic University, founded for our city and our people. We are teaching the next generation of game changers.

Our research is focused on finding solutions to the global challenges we all face today, from being at the heart of the fight against COVID, improving the air we breathe, tackling water pollution, to ensuring people across the globe have access to safe surgery and childbirth.

We are a vibrant and welcoming community.

We're proud to be an official partner of Birmingham 2022, the official venue for hockey and squash, and host to the largest athletes’ village. We are also playing our part to help make this the most sustainable games yet.

In 2022, let's grab the bull by the horns and discover everything that makes Birmingham the place to be.
