Title: What it's like to study a foundation year at the University of Birmingham
Duration: 1.38

S1: I'm studying Chemical Engineering, I'm in my final year now, and I'm from the United Arab Emirates.

S2: I'm from Iran, I'm studying Physics with Nanotechnology. I'm doing first year.

S1: A foundation year is very necessary for international students who are coming from different cultures and backgrounds. It prepares you well, it gives you confidence, strength and direction.

S2:  It really helped improve my English and I really got to know Birmingham city, the area and the campus. The first year of my degree compared to my foundation year was a bit more difficult because of the more complicated subjects we had to do.

S1: It's really different than coming from school or college to university, it's a big jump, so you want to be prepared for that.

S2: My favourite part about studying at the University of Birmingham is the campus, because the campus is green and everyone is students so it's easier to concentrate on my studies.

S1: My favourite part about studying here is you get to meet a lot of different students from different backgrounds, cultures, having the British experience, university life, independence, and hopefully when I finish I want to go back to the Emirates, work for a couple of years and then I want to come back and finish my Masters.
