The Development and Alumni Relations Office (DARO) division is responsible for generating opportunities for former students (alumni) to stay involved with the University, raise funds for charitable projects across campus, and work with industry and the public sector to build industrial partnerships and collaborations.
The University was founded on charitable giving and that tradition is continuing following the hugely successful Circles of Influence campaign, as we raise funds for a diverse range of projects in areas addressing society's biggest challenges.
DARO is made up of the following sections:
Alumni Relations organises events, volunteering opportunities, provides communications and thanks our supporters to keep our alumni engaged and connected with the University. Find out more about how Alumni Relations can support you.
More than 11,000 donors contributed to the record-breaking Circles of Influence fundraising campaign. The Regular Giving and Major Gift programmes encourage individuals, alumni and trusts and foundations to support the University. Every gift makes a real difference.
Circles of Influence
Circles of Influence set out in 2009 to:
- Develop a campus for the 21st century
- Find solutions to global health and lifestyle crises
- Improve children’s lives
- Support the brightest students
- Attract and retain outstanding academics
- Enable innovation
Our campaign closed in July 2015 and raised an incredible £193.4 million. This figure will help fund a number of vital projects and initiatives, including our unique Access to Birmingham scheme, which helps students from families and communities in the West Midlands who have little or no experience of Higher Education study at Birmingham.
The money will also fund our world-leading research. We are leading the fight against breast, brain and prostate cancer; developing new ways to diagnose autism in children; and combating superbugs such as MRSA and TB.
So, whether it helps transform our campus or fund the best researchers to fight cancer, your generosity combined with the University’s investment, will help the University to change lives for the better both in Birmingham and across the world.
