Receiving a phone call from a Birmingham student

Say hello to our team of student callers! Many of them have benefitted from scholarships or believe in our life-changing research, so they work with the Alumni Office to help share the benefits with more people, sooner.

Callers-page-picBy calling you to share their story and passion, current students reach out to former students like you to ask whether you would be interested in supporting the University’s vital work.

Our students are in the midst of deciding what to pursue after graduation, so they would love to hear your experience as a Birmingham graduate. Learning about your career path and an insight into your chosen industry can be such a valuable insight for students.

Finally, our callers want to update you on all the latest news and developments here at Birmingham, and tell you about upcoming events and opportunities to come back onto campus.

FAQs

When might I receive a call?

Student callers phone graduates throughout the academic year – usually at the following times of the week:

  • Monday – 6-9pm
  • Tuesday – 6-9pm
  • Wednesday – 1-4pm, 6-9pm
  • Thursday – 6-9pm
  • Friday – 6-9pm
  • Saturday – 10am-1pm
  • Sunday – 10am-1pm, 4-7pm

What might I receive a call about?

Projects we are currently fundraising for include:

  • 10,000 Lives: Scholarships, bursaries, summer schools and more, which help pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds achieve their dream of studying at university
  • Turning honey into hope: No new antibiotics have been discovered in 20 years, and bacteria are becoming resistant to the ones we have. Dr Sophie Cox and her team of engineers are on the verge of turning honey into a life-saving antibiotic

How can I tell if this call is really from the University?

If you receive a call from a student caller, they will be able to send you a verification email whilst you are on the phone to them. This email will come from giving@contacts.bham.ac.uk – a University domain email account.

Is the University a charity?

Definitely. We are registered with the Fundraising Regulator and an exempt charity under Schedule 3 of the Charities Act 2011. We also receive funding raised by other charities to undertake life-saving research, such as for our cancer research.

Do my fellow alumni make gifts when they speak to a student caller?

Each year, as many as 1,000 alumni make a gift after speaking to a student caller. We understand that not everyone may wish to or be able to make a gift, but if you do, 100% of your donation goes to your specified cause.

I want to make a gift, but I prefer not to give over the phone. What are my other options?

Student callers can arrange to send you a donation form by post and we will include a pre-paid envelope for you to return your gift to us. Alternatively you can give online.
