Counting down to the new library
Due to open in August 2016, excitement is building for the opening of the new £40 million library. Keys to the building have been handed over to the Library Services team and the transfer of books and resources into the library is now in full swing.
The library will be home to more than 12 kilometres of open shelving, containing more than 40,000 books, and many more resources will be stored below ground in the specialist ‘research reserve’.
Current student, Shona Smith (Second Year, BSc Business Management with Communications), had a behind the scenes tour of the library and says: 'I was lost for words when I first saw the library – it’s very impressive. I’m really looking forward to using the study spaces. There are plug sockets at every desk and it’s a much better space, it will help facilitate better learning. It’s so exciting to have these amazing brand new facilities; I will be one of the first people through the doors when it opens!'
The library will provide outstanding facilities for students and researchers. Housing technology rich learning spaces, it is designed to meet modern day learning styles, as well as providing flexible spaces that can be adapted to meet future needs. Overlooking the centre of our beautiful campus, it will be a truly inspirational space to study.
The land surrounding the library will be transformed into a new ‘Green Heart’ of campus, opening up the centre of campus and fulfilling Sir Aston Webb’s original vision for the design of campus.
