House of Lords Reception - 5 November 2010

Over 300 alumni, friends and supporters of the University came together for the annual House of Lords reception, now in its seventh year, on Friday 5th November.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor David Eastwood likened the event to a huge family wedding and was delighted to meet so many of our global community of alumni, some of whom had travelled from as far away as Iran and the USA. Professor Eastwood set out Birmingham’s strategy to become one of the world’s leading universities over the next five years and announced that we are tantalisingly close to completing the University’s £60 million Circles of Influence campaign.

The ever-popular reception, which sold out in a record-breaking 12 hours this year, was an enjoyable evening of conversation with old classmates and new friends.  Alumni attended from across the University’s disciplines and ranging from graduates of the 1940s to those who graduated most recently in July 2010, all of whom were keen to talk to representatives from the Guild of Students and some of our student scholarship recipients about life on today’s thriving campus.  Wine and canapés were served throughout the evening as alumni enjoyed the views of the Thames, the London Eye and other landmarks from the terrace. Guests were also invited to take a tour of the Houses of Parliament, which were thankfully free of gunpowder on this inauspicious date!

Thank you to everyone who attended and made the evening such an enjoyable and memorable occasion.

Next year’s reception will take place on Friday 14th October 2011.  Details of the event will be emailed to all alumni in the UK and online booking will be available in August.  To ensure you receive details of the next event, please visit to update your details
