Inspiring students through talks and guest lectures

Our ‘Book to the Future’ festival in 2015 was a fantastic example of how alumni volunteers can make a huge contribution to student experience at Birmingham.

Book to the Future

Volunteers make an important contribution to curriculums and events by inspiring students with a wide range of talks and lectures. In 2015 Birmingham students and staff benefited from a huge number of engaging events led by our alumni.

Our College of Arts and Law festival ‘Book to the Future’ was a fantastic success in 2015 and we were delighted to bring students, alumni and visitors to another exciting programme of workshops, lectures, poetry and performances from students, staff and alumni authors, poets and journalists.

Running over three days in October 2015, the festival featured a variety of exhibitions, poetry, writing workshops and some distinguished lectures support by alumni volunteers. Among the special guests were award-winning author and alumnus SJ Watson, who returned to campus to discuss the phenomenal international success of his first novel Before I Go to Sleep and sensational psychological thriller Second Life with BBC Radio 4 Women’s Hour presenter (and fellow alumna) Jane Garvey. This festival was extremely well attended and with the support of some high profile alumni volunteers we were able to offer and share a very unique arts festival to students and the wider community.
