Birmingham alumnus is full of beans

James Eder, founder of Student Beans

Alumnus James Eder (BCom Commerce, 2005) has brought it 'back to Birmingham' by creating a new regional hub for his growing digital business The Beans Group.

The new Birmingham office in the Custard Factory, Digbeth, is the first for the group outside London and takes the business back to where it began. Brothers James and Michael Eder founded Student Beans in Birmingham back in 2005 after James came up with a business plan for the company as part of a final year degree project. The brothers were committed to making a difference to both the lives of students, and local businesses, and The Beans Group portfolio has grown from two people working in a bedroom to a team of more than fifty.

James says the opportunities he got involved with and the skills he learnt at Birmingham, including work placements in the Philippines and Colombia, laid the foundations for becoming an entrepreneur. 'The University has been an excellent champion for us and the work we do' he says. 'I've returned every year since I graduated to guest lecture and it's brilliant to see the growth and support available to students and graduates today.'

The Beans Group helps brands and agencies to understand, access and engage young people and was named Digital Business of the Year 2013 at the National Business Awards. Studentbeans.com attracts millions of students every month, with students visiting the site for articles, offers, jobs and more. The Beans Group portfolio also includes Voxburner, an insights consultancy that reports on the trends, habits and attitudes of young consumers.

Michael Eder, Managing Director of The Beans Group, says: 'This exciting step will give us access to the strong talent in the digital sector that is available in the Midlands. It takes the business back to our original roots and the city that gave us the platform to help us get to where we are today. We’re very familiar with the city, its vibrant youth culture and the great things it can offer and through our recruitment of both full-time positions and internships, we hope to give back to the local student community that was so influential at the beginning of our journey.'

The Beans Group are currently recruiting a number of roles in Birmingham and London. For more information, visit their jobs board.
