Working Wardrobe Winner: Zain Akhtar
Looking smart is essential for starting a new job, and it won’t be a problem for 2016 alumnus Zain Akhtar (BSc Accounting and Finance, 2016), who won a £300 John Lewis voucher in our graduations win a working wardrobe competition.
Zain, who started with Royal Mail’s finance department earlier this month, was ecstatic his name was drawn from more than 400 new graduates who entered the contest by tweeting a picture with #UoBgraduation.
‘When I found out I had a huge smile on my face. It has really helped me save money on a professional wardrobe,’ he said, during a shopping spree at the John Lewis store in Grand Central, Birmingham.
Zain described his graduation day as extremely happy and said his parents and auntie were proud of all his hard work.
His favourite memories of Birmingham include time spent with friends: ‘I still hang out with them now and they have really helped me to succeed. While university life can be stressful at times, it’s all really worth it in the end.
‘Birmingham really helped to prepare me for my new job as well. It was such a great place to study, especially the Business School. Besides the practical side of the course, I learned how to work well in a group, communicate with senior staff and gain confidence speaking in front of a large group of people.’
Zain plans to keep in touch with the University and hopes to return to campus and help out with careers events for current students.
And his top piece of advice for his 2016 classmates comes from Finding Dory, simply ‘just keep swimming.’
