Dressed for success

Graduation day was cause for a double celebration for Eoghan McHugh (MSc Strategic Marketing and Consulting, 2014) when he became the lucky winner of £300 in Debenhams vouchers in the Alumni Office’s ‘working wardrobe’ competition.

Eoghan was one of over 2,000 UoB students who celebrated their graduation in December 2014; joining an international community of over 180,000 Birmingham alumni. He entered the Class of 2014 competition by tweeting a photo using #UoBgraduation for the chance to swap his cap and gown with a new working wardrobe.

‘I was delighted when I found out I’d won’, says Eoghan. ‘I never thought when I posted my photo that I would win, but the chance to spend £300 on clothes for work is an incredible opportunity, especially at the moment.’

‘I started a new job in February,’ explains Eoghan, ‘and the vouchers will enable me to make a great professional impact and a strong, first impression – I can’t wait to pick a suit for my first day!’

Impact is a word synonymous with Eoghan’s time at Birmingham, where he certainly made an impression both in and out of the lecture hall. He was awarded the Simon Evans Scholarship; a fund available for academically excellent students to continue into postgraduate study, and also worked throughout his studies.

‘I was fortunate to be employed through the University’s Worklink in a number of different capacities’ says Eoghan. ‘The role I most enjoyed was in the Marketing Department as a Database and Events Administrator within the Stakeholder Relations Team.

‘This provided valuable experience of ‘real’ working environments and taught me practical time-management, and organisational skills to complement my studies – plus it was great for the CV’.
