Student Spotlight - Cody Kelley

Cody Kelley (MA Shakespeare Studies) originally from Arizona, is studying at the Shakespeare Institute in Stratford Upon Avon after receiving a scholarship supported by alumni in the US.

Tell us a little bit about how you came to study at Birmingham.

I double majored in English Literature and Biblical Studies at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix and was teaching English to 4th grade students before applying to Birmingham. I chose Birmingham mostly because of the programme, being one of the few Shakespeare Masters programmes in existence. It is also the only one I came across that wasn’t designed solely for actors.

The Shakespeare Institute is based in Stratford, what do you like about it?

I am quite fond of Stratford, as it's pleasantly small and is a truly gorgeous little town with a charming character.

Is there anything that has surprised you about studying in the UK?

I’ve been surprised how different the teaching style is in the UK and how few assessed assignments there are, given the opposite is true of most programmes in the States.

What difference has your scholarship made to you?

The scholarship has allowed me to focus more fully on my research and enjoy being here, rather than having to worry about working in order to pay for living.

What's next for you?

I'll be moving back to the States and hope to teach at a university.

Can you describe your time at Birmingham so far in three words?

Inspirational, enlightening, and I suppose adventurous.

Finally, what is your favourite Shakespeare play?
