Four Questions with Daisy
Daisy Mutsau (MSci Chemistry with Industrial Experience, 2018), is currently undertaking the Novartis STEP International Development programme.
It is an opportunity that allows her to develop a good balance between technical skills such as Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) for pharmaceutical products, and essential skills like project management, presentation and communication through three rotations, in different departments, at different sites globally. She is set to complete rotations in Switzerland, Brazil and Austria.
What is the biggest mistake you have made since graduating and what have you learnt from it?
As a fresh graduate on my first job, I naturally wanted to make a good impression by always putting my best foot forward. The biggest mistake I made initially was thinking that this meant that I had to do everything alone. I have since learnt that asking for help is not a sign of weakness but rather a deprivation of opportunity for those who would love to assist you.
What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
I was once told to never get intimidated by opportunities that are outside of my comfort zone because there is only one way to learn. So now whenever I am offered an amazing opportunity I am not sure of, I say yes and then figure out how to do it later.
What have you learned since graduating that could be helpful to other graduates like you?
When it comes to applying for jobs, don’t rule yourself out even if you don’t fit the profile for your ambitions at face value. Your passion, coupled with your unique experiences, might just make you the exception.

For anyone with leadership ambition, I would strongly recommend reading Marshall Goldsmith’s book What Got You Here Won’t Get You There for tips on how to avoid complacency and build on your successes.
