Examinations for Semester 1 and Teaching and Examinations for Semester 2

Understandably, there have been questions relating to the examination period in January 2022 and the teaching mode for semester 2 from January 2022 – June 2022. This note sets out with clarity the current position for the University of Birmingham Dubai and is in line with the guidance and expectations of the Ministry of Education in the UAE.

Examinations – January 2022

All planned examinations for the examination period from 9th January 2022 to 21st January 2022 will move to being online exams. For the examination period we have decided to proactively extend the mode to be online for the whole of the examination period. This means that students will not have to switch mode half way through the examination period.

Semester 2 – January 2022 to June 2022

January Start Foundation Year students

Following a directive from the UAE Ministry of Education on 3rd January, we will be moving to online learning  commencing immediately from Monday 3rd January 2022 until Saturday 30th January 2022.

However, should the MoE confirm that it is possible for students to come to campus for some taught activity in those weeks, we are exploring whether we could provide some additional on campus support sessions for those of you who would like to attend them. This would be if your timetable would allow it with the time and ability to get to and from campus alongside other timetable commitments. This means your full curriculum will be delivered online and that no student will have to miss out, but that you could benefit from something additional.

This would also mean that as you have just joined us as a new Foundation Year student you would at least be able to come to campus and meet with your programme team and experience our new campus too.

We look forward to welcoming you if we can and will update you as soon as we hear any more from the Ministry of Education.

New & Returning Postgraduate Students

Given the ongoing nature of the increased number of cases in the UAE at present, we have reached the decision that we should remain online for teaching until Saturday 30th January 2022.

However, should the MoE confirm that it is possible for students to come to campus for some taught activity in those weeks, we are exploring whether we could provide some additional on campus support sessions for those of you who would like to attend them. This means your full curriculum will be delivered online and that no student will have to miss out, but that you could benefit from something additional.

This could also mean that you would at least have the opportunity be able to come to campus and meet with your programme team as well as experience our new campus too.

We look forward to welcoming you if we can and will update you as soon as we hear any more from the Ministry of Education.

For PGCE students you will continue in your current placements in schools where possible. You would need to switch to an online mode, in line with your placement school should that be necessary as part of the Placement School’s approach to managing COVID-19.

Returning Undergraduate and Foundation Year Students

You are currently due to return to campus during the UoBe week of activities commencing Monday 24th January 2022. This is then followed by the start of formal teaching for semester 2 on Monday 31st January 2022.

In line with our commitment to deliver your education on campus if we can, and all of the benefits that brings, we continue to plan to deliver both the UoBe week and the start to teaching for semester 2 on campus and you are expected to attend.

However, given how changeable to situation with COVID-19 is at present, we will review this position again in the week commencing 17th January 2022 and communicate any updated position by Friday 21st January at the latest.

**This statement reflects the position of the University of Birmingham Dubai only and does not affect students studying with the University of Birmingham in the UK, Singapore or at the Jinan Joint Institute in China.

The situation with respect of COVID-19 will continue to be kept under review in line with the circumstances in the UAE and in line with the UAE Ministry of Education’s regulations and Protocols with respect to operating educational institutions.

If you have any questions or concerns relating to your teaching, learning or assessment from January 2022 you should contact either your personal tutor or Programme Director for specific academic queries or for more general or administrative queries:  dubaistudentservice@contacts.bham.ac.uk as usual.
