Please join us for inspirational sessions led by global experts Dr Matthew Schuelka, Programme Director of the ISEN course at the University of Birmingham, Dubai; and Professor Karen Guldberg Director of the Autism Centre for Education and Research.
Session 1: Inclusion and Universal Design for Learning
This session will focus on school-wide frameworks and classroom practices that support students with disabilities in mainstream schools. We will discuss specific ways in which teachers can promote a culture and ethos of inclusivity in their classrooms, and support all students to learn through curricular and pedagogical innovation. The session will be hands-on and interactive, and focused on utilizing Dubai teachers’ own reflective practice to improve inclusivity in their classrooms and inspire school leadership teams to promote inclusivity across your schools.
Dr Matthew J. Schuelka is Lecturer of Inclusive Education at the University of Birmingham, and Programme Director of Inclusion and Special Educational Needs across both the UK and Dubai campuses.
Session 2: Making a difference in Autism Education - developing evidence based practice
This session will discuss the tasks, outcomes and specialist teaching principles that educators need to focus on when teaching autistic pupils. This will involve discussing dimensions of teaching that are common to all learners, whilst drilling down into distinctive teaching approaches for autistic learners. The session will be practical, interactive and will draw on real-life examples to explore how to personalize the learning environment for pupils on the autism spectrum. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss their own experience and practice, and to be involved in generating plans and ideas for pupils they work with.
Dr Karen Guldberg is Professor in Autism Studies, University of Birmingham, UK. She is also Director of the Autism Centre for Education and Research (ACER) and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, UK.
