Abstract

The last decade has seen the global proliferation first of mobile smartphones and then wearable devices. All of these devices come equipped with a number of sensors that are used by operating system's interface as well as various applications such as gaming and activity tracking. While wearables like fitness trackers are calibrated before use, smartphone apps that promise to do the same are not. In this session I will explain how apps can use the humble accelerometer sensors in an uncalibrated smartphone together with statistical signal processing techniques to track its carrier's physical activity and mode of transportation either overtly, in fitness tracking apps, or covertly, in apps disguised for other purposes.

This event will take place on Zoom and a link will be shared upon booking.
