Online Pre-sessional English Programme

Our online Pre-sessional English programme is designed to help you to develop your English language and academic skills in preparation for your studies at the University of Birmingham Dubai. Students with conditional offers have the option of attending one of these courses instead of retaking IELTS.

The curriculum is produced by our own academic staff at the University and is delivered using our own virtual learning environment as well as by video conference using Zoom.

They will include a mixture of

  • Interactive, class-based discussion and listening tasks set by your dedicated class tutor.
  • Guided reading and written tasks with feedback to develop your skills.
  • Full support throughout your course
  • Regular 1-1 tutorials by video to discuss your progress and answer any questions.
  • You will be assessed using a mixture of coursework and online tests.

Timetabled sessions will take into account the needs of students studying in different time zones.

Information about our pre-sessional programmes

We offer courses during the summer with flexible entry and exit points depending on your current level of English (IELTS score) and the requirements of your main University of Birmingham Dubai offer for: Foundation Pathways, undergraduate study and postgraduate study.

The length of course you need depends on your existing level of English, and on the score specified in the offer letter for your degree.

All our courses are accredited by the British Council with strengths identified in three areas: Course Design, Teaching and Care of Students.

If you wish to apply for one of our pre-sessional programmes you must present an approved English test, usually an IELTS, as proof of your ability in English.

For those joining us for 2020, we will also accept the following tests as evidence of English language proficiency:

  • TOEFL “At Home” Test
  • Duolingo English Test
  • Password English
  • Chinese College English Test (CET-6) (please note that this must be accompanied by at least a 6 week Pre-sessional English programme)

Proof of academic qualifications

Under these exceptional circumstances, we will accept scanned or photographed copies of documentation (certificate and transcripts) to confirm your academic results, rather than you having to provide original copies to confirm your place. You will need to provide original copies once you arrive on campus, but scanned or photographed versions will be accepted through the admissions portal to allow you to take up your place.

Business Management English (BME) Presessional
