Programme Structure

What makes a PhD in Artificial Intelligence at University of Birmingham Dubai different?

Our work is regularly presented in international conferences and journals, indicating the high standards we achieve in research.

At the University of Birmingham Dubai (UoBD), we work closely in small teams of researchers in close collaboration with our research teams at the home campus within a broad and lively research culture.

This combination means you get the necessary focus, while keeping an eye on the bigger picture in which your work is placed.

• Our School is ranked 3rd across all UK universities according to the latest UK-wide Research Excellence Framework (REF)
• Attend global conferences and present your work on an international stage
• Join a vibrant, diverse, and inclusive research community within the School of Computer Science with research areas across the CS/AI spectrum

• Engage in seminars that promote independent problem-solving and enquiry-based learning
• Participate in practical assignments that provide hands-on, real-world experience, allowing you to put theory into practice
• Benefit from 1:1 supervision that offers personalised learning which gives you the opportunity to get tailored guidance and feedback that meets your individual needs
• Develop a spectrum of skills, including critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, time management, and communication through project work

Find a supervisor

The first step is to find your supervisor. We encourage you to browse the biographies of faculty members to familiarise yourself with the research going on in your preferred areas. Each of these contains detailed information on research interests, current projects and recent publications.

When you apply, you can suggest one or two potential supervisors, who you think might be a good fit for you. However, this is not essential. If you know what you want to work on, but are unsure on supervisors, you can indicate this in your application and the PhD programme co-directors will study your proposal in detail, and judge who is best suited to be your supervisory team.

You can also find a supervisor based at our campus in Edgbaston.

• Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence
• Natural Language Processing
• Networks and Security

English language requirements

To study at the University, you must be able to demonstrate a good level of written and spoken English. Many applicants do this by submitting a recent IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE result, or by completing a Presessional English course.

The level of English language proficiency required varies depending on your level of study and subject area.

You can view the full English language requirements, including accepted tests and required scores, on our entry requirements page for the Dubai campus.

Research proposal

You will need to submit a research proposal. It’s a key part of your application, so take your time. Your potential supervisors will use it to decide if your research is something they can support.

Your proposal should be a clear and concise summary of your research. It generally consists of an outline of your proposed research project, including your main research questions and the methods you intend to use.

You should also comment on the potential impact and importance of your intended research and on how your work would interact with current trends in your academic field. It should illustrate the relevance of your topic to the research interests and expertise of the staff within your chosen department.

Paying your tuition fees

Tuition fees are payable for each year of your programme. To help you manage the cost of study, you can pay fees in full or in three instalments per academic year.

To secure your place, you must pay a non-refundable tuition fee deposit of AED 5,000 by the deadline stated in your Conditional Offer. This deposit will be deducted from your tuition fees.

To make an initial enquiry for this programme please contact Panagiotis Andriotis.

Before you apply for this programme you will need to discuss your research with your supervisor.

If you have a question about our admissions process, including how to apply, your offer and how to track your application, please visit our admissions portal.

ATAS - Academic Technology Approval Scheme

If you are made an offer then you will need an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office before the University can issue you with an unconditional offer.

We recommend that you apply for your ATAS certificate as soon as you receive an offer from us.
