Why Birmingham Dubai?

I was motivated to pursue Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science at the University of Birmingham Dubai because of its reputation for offering a cutting-edge curriculum in this field.

Pursuing a degree at a global top 100 university in Dubai allowed me to stay in my favourite city close to my family while gaining the knowledge and skills needed to make a difference.

The professors were not only knowledgeable but also approachable and friendly. Their expertise in the field was evident, and the modules offered were well-designed and allowed me to learn about the emerging technologies.

My Birmingham Dubai experience

I had the privilege of holding leadership positions as the co-president of several societies, including art and badminton clubs. These experiences provided me with valuable leadership experience.

The University's career services provided me with valuable opportunities like the Entrepreneurship World Cup. I discovered this opportunity through notifications from the Careers team on Canvas.

My professors and academic advisors were exceptional. They offered one-on-one valuable guidance and assistance whenever I needed it. Their support with my dissertation helped me navigate the complexities of research and produce high-quality work.

The University demonstrated immense compassion and practical assistance when I faced a challenging personal situation. Every member of the faculty went above and beyond to help me catch up on the courses I had missed. Their understanding and support during this difficult time not only relieved a significant burden but also reaffirmed the caring and empathetic community at UoBD.

Birmingham Dubai’s impact

The University played a crucial role in supporting me throughout my internship experiences, allowing me to effectively balance my coursework and job responsibilities. Faculty members were incredibly supportive during this challenging phase. They provided guidance and understanding, ensuring that my academic commitments were met without compromising the quality of my internship work. This collaborative effort between the University and faculty members made it possible for me to make the most of my internship opportunities while successfully navigating my academic requirements.

The University of Birmingham Dubai offered a wealth of opportunities for networking and connecting with industry professionals. One noteworthy event was the careers fair, where I networked with professionals from various industries, including a memorable encounter with the managing director of Microsoft, who had invited me to his office. These interactions were not only inspiring but also opened doors to potential career prospects and internships.

My professional achievements

During my time at the University, I secured multiple internships, one with Wafi Property as a graphic design intern and another with Deloitte as an IT audit intern. The application process for both internships involved several rounds of interviews. I believe what set me apart from other applicants was the knowledge and skills I had acquired through my coursework.

Two other positions, one as the PR Lead for the Entrepreneurship World Cup and the other as a Software Engineer for a project at Birmingham City Council, were secured through the University's career services. These roles allowed me to further develop my communication skills and thrive in a collaborative team environment. Overall, these internship experiences not only complemented my academic knowledge but also prepared me for a successful transition into the professional world.

Advice for students

One piece of advice I would offer incoming students is to embrace extracurricular activities and actively participate. I would also recommend students to seize networking opportunities by taking full advantage of career fairs organised by the University, as this can open doors for you.

Furthermore, don’t hesitate to reach out to academics because their guidance can be invaluable and stay updated with industry trends and emerging technologies since the industry evolves rapidly.
