Valeria Emin

Student

Hi! I’m Valeria, a Digital Media and Communications student studying in Dubai, the city where I’ve grown up and feel most at home.

A day in my life

A typical day in my student life starts with waking up early, doing a quick workout before getting ready to go to University. Once I arrive at campus, I grab a quick bite or coffee before heading to my lectures and seminars, which are always engaging. After classes, I check if there are any University clubs or events I can attend before heading out and meeting with friends.

Why Birmingham Dubai?

Out of all the universities in Dubai, the University of Birmingham immediately caught my attention with its lively and beautiful campus, alongside the range of events and opportunities on offer.

Before joining, I attended two Online Open Days. They were very useful as they both covered important and general information about the University, while also serving as an opportunity to ask any course-specific questions to both members of staff and students.

I have lived most of my life in Dubai due to family work, therefore choosing to study here felt natural. The city is a cultural and opportunity hub, full of opportunities and ideas, making it my first pick for university.

Why I chose to study Digital Media and Communications at Birmingham Dubai

My decision to study my course of BA Digital Media and Communications was driven by my creativity and my passion for culture, power, and humanities, which are all strong elements in the course. Even though my long-term goals before applying to university were unclear, the course topics and selected units highly resonated with me, especially with the interactivity present.

My Birmingham Dubai experience

I highly enjoy my student experience, from attending interesting lectures to going to clubs and events with friends, it has been positive so far. One of my favourite places on campus is probably the outside courtyard next to the cafeteria, since it is very relaxing and calm.

The University is very supportive. Lecturers and members of staff are always willing to help, whether it’s providing academic guidance or career support.

I also received a partial scholarship, which was very helpful in decreasing the financial stress I had when applying to university.

Advice for students

The top piece of advice I would give is to encourage prospective students to take part in as many university experiences as possible when applying. Not only does it introduce you to more people, but it also lets you explore different areas and develop your hobbies and potential skills.
