This talk will give you an introduction to Marguerite Gérard’s The Reader in relation to the National Gallery’s virtual exhibition Fruits of the Spirit: Art from the Heart.

About this event

Fruits of the Spirit: Art from the Heart pairs nine paintings from the National Gallery’s collection with nine paintings from regional partner collections from across the UK, encouraging community responses and conversations around love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness, generosity and self‐control – in dialogue with the exhibition’s 18 paintings.

Looking at Marguerite Gérard’s, The Reader the team have explored the connections we could draw between patience and the expanded look at women in the Barber’s collection.

Hear from Helen Cobby, Assistant Curator and Jane Nicol, the Barber’s Nurse in Residence as they explore this painting’s narrative through a female gaze, discussing the virtue of Patience, motherhood and healthcare.
