BHM2020: Challenging Microaggressions

Dates
Tuesday 27 October 2020 (18:30-19:30)

Microaggressions – brief and often subtle behaviours or statements that communicate a negative message about a group of people – are just one way that everyday racism presents itself in modern society. At this online event, the panel of staff and students will examine the historical roots of microaggressions and why they are harmful today, as well as looking at positive steps you can take to respond to them. Speakers will also discuss how allies can challenge microaggressions, and provide practical suggestions of how to encourage initiators to reflect and change their behaviour going forward. The panel will include UoB staff, a PhD researcher, the Guild President, EDI Student Ambassadors and the Guild’s Ethnic Minority Students’ Officer, and will be chaired by Dr Sheeba Rosewilliam. After initial short presentations from the panel, questions will be invited from the audience.

Open to Staff and Students.

This event is hosted by the College of Life & Environmental Sciences.
