 Daughters of the Dust (1991) directed by Julie Dash is a dreamlike and impressionistic portrait of three generations of Gullah women on the Sea Islands off the coast of South Carolina as they plan to move onto the mainland and head north as part of the great migration. Set in 1902, fifty years after the abolition of slavery, this landmark film explores notions of home, identity, culture and family. \n
