SUMMARY:A Holiday in the 'Axis of Evil': Snapshots from North Korea
UID:www.birmingham.ac.uk/73671
DESCRIPTION:\n \n \n The University of Birmingham'sDigital Marketing and Communications Officer, Ben Goodwin, recently embarked on a trip to the hermit kingdom of North Korea. Officially known as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, this highly secretive and propaganda-filled state welcomes around 3,500 Western tourists a year, who are accompanied by local guides at all times. \n \n In this lunchtime lecture, Ben will offer a glimpse into this secretive republic through his photographs and anecdotes – both hilarious and moving – of his time in the country described in 2002 by George W. Bush as part of the 'axis of evil' with Iraq and Iran. \n \n From 20 metre-tall bronze statues of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il, photographs taken from inside the Korean Demilitarized Zone and a look at the Arirang Mass Games – a 100,000-strong spectacle of mass dance and gymnastics – this promises to be a slideshow like you've never seen before. \n \n FREE; no booking required\n \n \n
