DESCRIPTION:Lecture by Professor Alice Roberts, Clinical Anatomist and Professor of Public Engagement in Science for Community Day Anatomy is an incredibly visual subject. Illustration is a crucial part of how anatomical knowledge is passed on, and has been since the sixteenth century. Tracing the history of the illustrated anatomy text through time illuminates advances in anatomical knowledge, the changing relationship between art and science, and the development of new technology - in the investigation of anatomy itself, in the production of illustrations, and in publication and distribution of material. Medical imaging, for instance, has had an impact on both the exploration of living anatomy, and the ways in which we now depict the human body. Anatomy was always a subject which was inextricably associated with death and cadavers; now, more than ever, it’s also about living people. 21st century anatomy illustration reflects this shift, and makes anatomy - “without the gore” - accessible to a wider audience.
