SUMMARY:Stress and mental health in daily life
UID:www.birmingham.ac.uk/207408
DESCRIPTION:Interested in stress and mental health with an emphasis on acute and chronic stress during adolescence? If you answered yes, then this session could be for you. Using a broad range of examples, this masterclass will encourage you to reflect upon your own experiences.\n
Start at the beginning of human kind by discussing the evolution of the stress response and the centrality of the fight-or-flight response. Stress manifests differently in every individual so this masterclass will lay the groundwork for a strong understanding of the role of stress on mental health in daily life.\n
Focusing firstly on common mental health problems like anxiety and depression during adolescence and young adulthood will provide an opportunity to explore the complex connections to stress. Paired with and supported by ongoing research, the session will shed light on contemporary research areas, including the effects of stress on cognitive and brain development.\n
By the end of this session, you'll be able to:\n

Identify common stressors in the lives of Year 12 and Year 13 students
Identify different acute and chronic stress measurement techniques
List various stress response markers in mental health research
Describe how techniques, such as imagery, stress mindset, and arousal reappraisal training can be used to help cope with stress and the challenges of daily life

This event is open to all Year 12 and 13 students; you don't need any specific experience to be able to attend. Explore the rest of our masterclasses for more fun learning opportunities.\n
