Purpose of Role
We have currently reached capacity with this role and are unable to accept any more Collections Digitisation Volunteers at this point in time. We hope to reopen this volunteering role in the near future - please keep an eye on this page if interested.
To assist in the creation of a digital catalogue of the Lapworth’s large range of scientifically and culturally important Collections and Archives. There are currently two different digitisation volunteering roles available:
This will involve photography, 3D scanning and photogrammetry of geological and palaeontological specimens in the Museum’s collections, and the cataloguing of generated photos, 3D models and data in online databases.
This will involve photography and flatbed scanning of archival materials, such as historical geological maps, field notebooks and teaching materials. The images generated will also need to be catalogued into the Museum’s databases.
There is no requirement for specific experience or qualifications, though it is important to have an interest in the work. You will receive training in the different aspects relating to your volunteering role.
I started out helping the Lapworth at public festivals and events. This quickly developed into me creating films and media as the staff encouraged me to try new ideas and ways to work with the museums space. Volunteering at the Lapworth has built my skills in videography and photography leading to opportunities such as working on BBC Springwatch and exhibiting in their gallery.
