Public Engagement Volunteer

Purpose of Role

We have currently reached capacity with this role and are unable to accept any more Public Engagement Volunteers at this point in time. We hope to reopen this volunteering role in the near future - please keep an eye on this page if interested.

To enhance visitor experiences in the Museum by engaging with members of the public with the Lapworth’s internationally important collections. There are two different public engagement volunteer roles available:

  • Museum Tour Guide

The Lapworth currently runs free monthly tours of the Museum and our stores. The volunteer will assist with these tours and help us to create new and exciting content.

  • Museum Object Handler

This will involve engaging with members of the public within the Museum by exploring and handling real/museum grade replicas of geological objects from the Lapworth Collections.

Both roles will involve assisting with public engagement at various outreach events throughout the year including family fun days and science festivals. Both roles will involve working with the Lapworth team and other volunteers.

There is no specific experience or qualifications required, though it is important to have an interest in the work. You will receive training in the different aspects relating to your volunteer role.

We hope volunteers:

  • Have an interest in geology and museums
  • Are confident in public speaking and delivery
  • Have experience of working in a public facing role
  • Are reliable and friendly
  • Have good interpersonal skills

Volunteers may be required to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and we may request a character reference.
