Environmental Mass Spectometry (EMS)

Cutting-edge methods to examine the past.

The Environmental Mass Spectrometry lab (EMS) provides a range of analysis for the investigation of environmental, biological and geological samples.

Our labs consist of Continuous-Flow Isotope-Ratio Mass Spectrometers (CF-IRMS), Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometers (GC-MS; Agilent) and Gas Chromatography Flame Ionizing Detectors (GC-FID; Agilent).

Our applications broadly fit in one of the following three categories:

  • Hydrology: rainwater, rivers, lakes, oceans, groundwater/cave system and plastic pollution
  • Geosystems: Carbonate fossils and sediments, organic carbon from sediments and soils
  • Ecology: Organic composition of plant and invertebrate materials

For further details on any of these applications or to discuss possible collaborative research or consultancy please email Matt Allison (Senior Technician) until July 2024, and thereafter Eimear Orgill (Research Infrastructure Manager).
