Award Description

The Department of Drama and Theatre Arts are pleased to announce the Barry Jackson and Culture Forward Birmingham Scholarship for MA Performance Practices Applied Artists applicants committed to performing arts in Birmingham.

The scholarship, provided by the Barry Jackson Fund, will connect with the work of the University’s new cultural engagement programme, Culture Forward, in collaboration with key cultural partners in Birmingham.

The successful candidate will complete the one-year MA (full-time) and an internship of up to three months with a dedicated cultural partner. The internship supports the successful candidate with consolidated time to develop new performance work representative of Birmingham’s socio-cultural, linguistic and creative context.

Value of Award

The value of the scholarship is half the home tuition fee (currently £5,085).

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants need to have already applied to the MA Performance Practices: Applied Artists at the University of Birmingham.


Applicants must be full time, UK fee-paying students.

To apply, please complete the application form by end-of-day (UK) Friday 4th August, which will request:


1. Previous, present or future artistic projects you have developed or aim to develop in Birmingham. Please include your key artistic collaborators as well as the social and artistic aims and outcomes. (Approx. 350 words)
2. Benefits of the scholarship towards your career and future development. (Approx. 150 words)
