Award Description

The Business School is investing in new home and overseas doctoral research students.  Outstanding applicants will be considered for identified topics in the following departments:

  • Department of Accounting

    The Department of Accounting invites PhD scholarship applications to pursue interdisciplinary research using interpretive and critical research approaches across the following topic areas:

Accountability and ‘Sustainability’ 

Ecological accounting. Biodiversity accounting. Carbon accounting. Social accounting. Corporate social responsibility

Financial Accounting and Corporate Reporting 

Accounting standards and standard-setting. Narrative reporting. Management commentary. Integrated reporting and emerging corporate reporting frameworks

Taxation

The role, development and impacts of taxation policy. Formal and informal taxation in practice

Public Sector Accounting

Accounting, accountability, valuation and control in local and central government, public-private partnerships and across the public and not-for-profit sectors (e.g. healthcare, housing, higher education, police)

The Accounting Profession

Education, professionalisation and social mobility

Digital Corporate Reporting

The communication, use and regulation of digital corporate reporting

  • Department of Finance

    The Department of Finance welcomes applications interested in completing a PhD in any area of finance. It particularly welcomes applicants in the following areas outlined below:

The Department of Finance offers access to the most frequently used databases, related to Finance research such as WRDS (most components of WRDS such as BoardEx, CSMAR, CRSP, Bureau van Dijk, WorldScope, etc.), Eikon (for instance, this covers Datastream, ESG related databases, and T1), Bloomberg, etc.

  • Department of Marketing

    The Department of Marketing invites applications from applicants in any of the four key areas below:

Culture Consumer culture and sociology of consumption, mediated representations of gender, sexuality, ethnicity and class
Digital Research in Marketing Consumer complaining and negative WOM in online consumer behaviour

Value of Award

A full scholarship is the equivalent of an ESRC studentship and covers tuition fees plus a living allowance per annum for three years, subject to satisfactory progress.

Eligibility Criteria

We anticipate that those to whom we offer funding: 

  • Will have obtained the minimum of a 2:1, and preferably a first class honours at undergraduate level in a social sciences or closely related subject

  • Will hold, or expect to achieve, a Master’s degree at merit or preferably at distinction level in a Business or relevant subject

  • Will have formulated a strong research proposal demonstrating the potential to make an original contribution in their chosen topic

How to Apply

Potential candidates for the Birmingham Business School Doctoral Scholarships must have an offer of a place to study for a PhD.  If you do not already have an offer, you must apply by 31 January 2022 and mark your electronic application Birmingham Business School Scholarships.  At the same time, you should send a separate Birmingham Business School Scholarship application form, along with your research proposal, to Dr Sheena Leek, Director of the Doctoral Programme (business-pgr-research@contacts.bham.ac.uk) and mark your email ‘Birmingham Business School Scholarships’. 

If you already have a place to start on the doctoral programme in September 2022, you will automatically be considered for these awards, you need not apply again. If you are currently a Masters student, an offer of a scholarship will be conditional on the successful completion of your studies at the required level. Please note that previous applicants need not apply.
