Award Description

The James Pantyfedwen Foundation began its operations on 1 April 1998 when a new scheme was agreed with the Charity Commissioners. The present Foundation is a successor to two former charitable trusts - the Catherine and Lady Grace James Foundation (established in 1957) and the John and Rhys Thomas James Foundation (established in 1967). Both these foundations had been set up by the late Sir D.J. James whose aim was to create a permanent endowment to benefit the people of Wales.

Applications can only be considered from Welsh people for postgraduate study, and some priority is currently given to those students undertaking postgraduate research work. The Foundation does not, in any circumstances, supplement awards provided by local education authorities and research councils.

Value of Award

Currently grants are awarded for the payment of tuition fees, up to a maximum of £5,000 in each case.

Eligibility Criteria

All subject areas are considered but, to be eligible, students must meet the qualifying criteria. Applications can only be considered from Welsh people who satisfy the following conditions:

  • Applicants must have a permanent address in Wales at sometime during the three years immediately preceding the date of application (note that a term-time address in Wales, such as a college or university student, does NOT fall within this category) and
  • Applicants must be either born in Wales OR have one or both parents born in Wales OR have for an aggregate period of not less than seven years been regular pupils or students at any educational institution(s) in Wales

Currently the Foundation does NOT consider applications of the following types:

  • Undergraduate courses (including intercalated degree courses in medical science)
  • Courses at institutions that have not been approved by the Department of Education
  • Higher degrees where students already have a higher degree (this does not exclude progress from a Master’s degree to a PhD)
  • Accounting training courses
  • Private tuition (e.g. for music students)
  • PGCE courses
  • Postgraduate training courses in Social Work
  • CPE course in Law (but Legal Practice Courses are permitted)
  • Master’s courses of more than one year’s duration. In such cases applications for the second year of study are allowed

How to Apply

The closing date for applications for courses which start in September/October in any year (or with a later starting date in the same academic year) is 30 June preceding the start date.

Application forms are available from the James Pantyfedwen Foundation website from 1 April in any year.

For those students awaiting examination results (e.g. final degree) the forms can be submitted before the outcome is known. In such circumstances students must inform the Foundation at a later date about the outcome of these examinations. Alternatively the submission of the form can be delayed until the examination results are known.
