Rachel is the bilingual (English/Mandarin) Research Fellow for the Birmingham site on the TLANG project. Working closely with Professor Angela Creese and Adrian Blackledge, she is responsible for liaising with the Chinese community in Birmingham and also raising the profile of the project. Rachel will be collecting and analysing data from the Birmingham Ladywood Ward and will serve as the main contact for the key research participants in Birmingham.
Rachel was a fully-qualified English language teacher in China and she taught English at Xi’an Jiaotong University before immigrating to the UK in 2002. She was trained in Applied Linguistics and TESOL and was actively researching those topics whilst in China. Since 2003, as well as working full time in financial administration and project management, Rachel has been working as a freelance interpreter for clients in Legal Aid, and various other entities in both the public and private sectors including the NHS and Birmingham City Council. Rachel has also recently attended workshops and training events on migration, multilingualism, linguistic ethnography, translation etc. Her other research interests include intercultural communication, TESOL, and translanguaging related studies.
